Being Fired Is So Hot!
We still have our job (we think), but with a duo of recent firings stirring up buzz, we’re keeping our head down. It’s never been our style to cause a ruckus. Sure, we’ve said things about Ashlee Simpson‘s lack of talent, Britney Spears‘ lack of discretion, and Dick Cheney‘s lack of aim, and for those we’re sorry—kind of. But we do enjoy our work and don’t want to follow in the path of Melanie Martinez and Harold Reynolds.
Searches on Ms. Martinez jumped from zero into the tens of thousands this week after she was let go by PBS. The host of “The Good Night Show” on PBS Kids was shown the door after it was revealed that she had made a humorous video years ago mocking abstinence. The 30-second clip set off waves of searches on “melanie martinez video” and “technical virgin video.” In the video, Martinez touts anal sex as a way for girls to stay pure—causing an enormous surge in searches on “technical virgin” and “melanie martinez technical virgin.”
Seaminess and sexual innuendo also played a role in ESPN’s abrupt disappearing of popular baseball analyst Harold Reynolds. Searches on the “Baseball Tonight” mainstay also went from zero into the thousands as sports fans tried to figure out why the 10-year employee was fired. Related queries on “harold reynolds fired” and “harold reynolds firing” swirled as rumors about his exit made the rounds. ESPN kept tight-lipped about the incident—which only fueled the fires of searchers, but Reynolds admitted to the New York Post that his departure was due to an accusation of sexual harassment filed against him.
When you hear about these sort of things happening in threes, you can’t help but wonder who’s next to get the axe. So, um, don’t blame us if we avoid the boss’s gaze right about now…
