The golden touch of “American Idol” doesn’t end with anointing a new set of disposable reality stars every year. It extends to the musicians featured on popular theme weeks, the songs performed by the “Idol” hopefuls, and this season, an unlikely anthem.

The song “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter offers a melodramatic sendoff each week as it plays over a freshly eliminated contestant’s video highlights. The prominent placement of the tune has led to overwhelming interest. Queries on Powter are up 133% in the last month, and he’s nestled in our top 50 music searches. Over one-third of those looking for the sensitive singer are from the 13–17 “Idol” target demo, and he’s drawing strong interest from the ladies, with 70% of his searches from women.

Searches on the song follow the same female-heavy demographic trend and have more than doubled in the last month. As the tune holds steady at #1 on the pop charts, related searches on “bad day lyrics,” “had a bad day,” and “daniel powter bad day” have all cast a gloomy pall over Search. Is Powter benefitting from the misfortune of “Idol” hopefuls, or does he have bad days ahead when the show ends its season five run? Stay tuned…
